Is a black dog an omen?

my dad comes from a small tow called alta villa in sicily. he was telling us that whenever there's a funeral in the town the dog would appear and he would follow them down the street and into the church and lay down. everyone knew the dog and love the dog. it didn't belong to anyone it was everyone's dog. what does it mean?
